The Eminem Show was the best-selling album of 2002. At the Grammy Awards of 2003 it was nominated for Album of the Year and became Eminem's third LP in four years to win the award for Best Rap Album. It has been certified 8× Platinum by the RIAA, with over 9 million copies sold in the U.S and over 19 million albums worldwide. The Eminem Show was Eminem's first album to be mainly self-produced, and was the first Eminem album to be released under Shady Records.
Unlike his other albums, this album featuring a more personal and serious side of Eminem. This change gives the album a lighter tone, a departure from the hardcore and controversial nature of his previous albums. One of the most noticeable changes was the big and lighter change of lyrics in the album. For example, in his previous album, The Marshall Mathers LP, a song of hatred is called "Kill You", and there is another one called "Kim", which is aimed at his ex-girlfriend/wife.Over the course of the album, he touches on the issues of race in hip hop ("White America"), his childhood ("Cleanin' Out My Closet"), the United States Government, army, and terrorism ("Square Dance"), his 2000 assault on a nightclub bouncer and his following conviction ("Soldier"), him coming to terms with fate and how he sold his soul to money, fortune and fame, realizing that fame isn't worth it ("Say Goodbye Hollywood"), his status as both a hip hop and pop superstar ("Sing for the Moment"), and his relationship with his ex-wife Kim and daughter Hailie ("Hailie's Song").

The album sold 1,835,000 copies in its first two weeks of release in the United States in November, 2004. Worldwide sales of the album stand at 15 million copies, with 7.8 million being sold in the United States alone Contents
Sadly, this is Em's first major album not to win Best Rap Album Grammy Award. This is the only Eminem album that does not include a Steve Berman skit or a Ken Kaniff skit (besides Infinite). However, both characters reappeared on Eminem's recent studio album Relapse, which included a Steve Berman skit appearing as its own track while the Ken Kaniff skit appears following the end of the song 'Underground' as a hidden skit. This also the first Eminem major label album to not feature Dina Rae on Track 13.
